I totally identify with your conflicted feeling regarding patriotism and nationalism. It's great that I no longer do a full-body cringe when I see a flag on a car or house, but it doesn't mean I am "all in" on celebrating our national identity. That being said, I am proud to have cast my ballot in advance voting. I hope that the outcome of the election means a step toward a progressive Canada and inspires us to be better and rejects threats to our sovereignty.
everybody underestimated the four nations tournament, myself included. we all thought it would be like the all star game - i.e., some of the most boring hockey you'll ever watch in your life, because no one wants to get injured during the regular season for a game that doesn't matter, and it's hard to have any synergy with teammates you don't play with.
but, it was many of the players' first opportunity to play hockey for their country, and it was so important and meaningful and emotional for them. it was really kind of amazing. unfortunately it also meant really important players ending up with season ending injuries, which, selfishly, sucked lol.
not trying to be obtuse here - although US and canada being hockey archrivals is as old as the sport itself [something a lot of first time watchers i think didn't understand], the backdrop to all of this was certainly...something. and your comic so beautifully and poignantly interwove those two realities. i just didn't have more to add on that front and was excited that two things i love [hockey & your work] overlapped :)
This was beautifully done. Wonderful job. I'm excited and scared for what will happen Monday but I am grateful to be Canadian every day despite all of the problems in our country.
So well said (and drawn) - hopefully Canadians can continue to hold on to this ability to hold many things in our brains at the same time. Maybe a cure for polarization.
Beautifully put. I felt the same way about the hockey - didn't realize I'd been holding my breath the whole time 😬
And we live in a place that makes it so easy to vote in advance. I went to my local Elections Canada office last week - no line, just a steady stream of people, and delicious Bingsu from the mall on my way out.

This is such a lovely comment, thank you!! <3

Damn, I wish I could like this more than once. Greetings from over the pond.
💛💛 and sorry from your southern neighbor 😭
Beautiful on all levels!
So well done, thank you for this!
(and voted early a few days ago! :) )

A salute to you from down here in California. Well done. Love your cartoons!
As an American (whatever that means, now), I was rooting for Canada during that game.
And always will be. Let our country's utter stupidity be the thing that saves you from CPC.
You captured all my feelings, but better. Thanks Zoe! <3
