I totally identify with your conflicted feeling regarding patriotism and nationalism. It's great that I no longer do a full-body cringe when I see a flag on a car or house, but it doesn't mean I am "all in" on celebrating our national identity. That being said, I am proud to have cast my ballot in advance voting. I hope that the outcome of the election means a step toward a progressive Canada and inspires us to be better and rejects threats to our sovereignty.
everybody underestimated the four nations tournament, myself included. we all thought it would be like the all star game - i.e., some of the most boring hockey you'll ever watch in your life, because no one wants to get injured during the regular season for a game that doesn't matter, and it's hard to have any synergy with teammates you don't play with.
but, it was many of the players' first opportunity to play hockey for their country, and it was so important and meaningful and emotional for them. it was really kind of amazing. unfortunately it also meant really important players ending up with season ending injuries, which, selfishly, sucked lol.
not trying to be obtuse here - although US and canada being hockey archrivals is as old as the sport itself [something a lot of first time watchers i think didn't understand], the backdrop to all of this was certainly...something. and your comic so beautifully and poignantly interwove those two realities. i just didn't have more to add on that front and was excited that two things i love [hockey & your work] overlapped :)
