In 2021, I took part in the New Yorker Cartoon Challenge, where cartoonists teach comedians how to draw a cartoon over Zoom using verbal instructions only. Astonishingly, I was paired with none other than Ayo Edebiri in her pre-”The Bear” era, and now that she is the most famous person in the world and decorated with many awards, the New Yorker has re-released a version of the video on TikTok.
What a strange, lovely opportunity for a sad cartoonist stuck at home, and how surreal to reflect on what has changed in three years. Watch the full 13 minute video here!
A little while ago, Martine Severin of the This is How We Create podcast reached out and asked me to be on it. The episode aired yesterday and I daresay you will enjoy it!
MONUMENTALLY, yesterday, I finished my pitch deck <AIR HORNS> and sent it off to my agent.
In January, I had set a goal of getting this done before April, and the last 8 weeks have been a blur. This has felt like the hardest project I’ve ever tackled, and it is only the first of many, many finish lines to come. I am presently experiencing soaring levels of emotional exhaustion.
In April, I am working on the final art for an illustrated picture book about clouds - the “sequel” to the volcano book. Very excited to get away from my laptop and give my dislocating thumbs a break.
Here is a sneak peek of my pitch deck bio.
Currently reading/listening:
The Body Keeps The Score. Yup! Back to basics with understanding the roots of my trauma responses! When my therapist told me that I should start doing yoga as a first step, I fully did not believe her.
I’m coming to terms with the fact that yoga can be something healthy instead of just an activity I inflict upon myself in the maladaptive pursuit of *perfect fitness,* and that embodied practices could be HUGE for this next stage of creative life.
This On Being interview of Ocean Vuong from just before lockdown (March 2020). Weirdly, there is talk of embodied practices (a sign to myself that I need to start doing yoga already)
The interview led me to this beautiful piece he wrote for the Rumpus in 2014.
